What We Do (and Don’t) at Mystery & Whim

Mystery & Whim isn’t a typical publisher. We’re a small, friendly shop that helps first-time authors move forward—often by pointing you to the right resources at the right time. Think of us as light-touch guides, not a vanity press.

What we do

• Map the path from draft to printed book (realistic steps, realistic timelines).
• Curate resources so you’re not lost in choice overload (editors, formatters, cover basics, KDP/Ingram, ISBNs).
• Keep costs in check while explaining the tradeoffs (speed, quality, visibility).
• Be friendly, helpful—and sometimes blunt. Honest feedback saves you money and time.

What we don’t do

• Get-rich schemes. There isn’t one for new authors.
• Ghostwriting & mainstream deals. If you’re born into a rich niche and want a ghostwriter and a big-house rollout—that’s not us. We can refer you to people who play in that arena.
• Rights-grabs or upsells. We want you to own your work and understand every contract you sign.

How we think about cost vs. success

We try to make this as inexpensive as possible, but there’s always a balance: editing, design, and distribution are investments. We’ll help you spend wisely, not endlessly.

If your goal is a book that says “I was here; I mattered,” we’re in your corner. If you need full-service PR and a tour bus, we’ll point you to folks who do that well.

Bottom line: we help you get unstuck, publish with confidence, and keep your voice intact.
